For top-notch AC repair, replacement, or maintenance, contact Correy Baker Heating & Air today at (951) 419-4146!

1. Change Your Filters More Often

As the saying goes, “out of sight, out of mind.” This is often true in the case of home air filters, as many people go far too long without changing them. You should at the very least check your filter once a month, and it’s a good idea to replace them monthly as well. If you have pets, smoke in the house, or typically have a lot of people walking in and out, you may want to check these filters weekly or biweekly.

2. Invest in a Programmable Thermostat

If your thermostat doesn’t have a digital display, it’s probably time to replace it. In fact, replacing an old, inefficient thermostat can often lead to huge energy savings for an inexpensive investment. There are highly advanced models like the Nest self-learning thermostat, but others from companies like Honeywell can give you great results at a fraction of the price.

3. Make Sure Your House is AC-Friendly

Some people will invest heavily in their home’s AC and heating system, but still find that they are running the system around the clock to get to the desired temperature. It’s important to make sure you’ve patched up any leaks around windows and doors, and have proper insulation in your attic!

4. 78° Is The Magic Temperature

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, your AC system consumes approximately 8% more energy for every degree under 78°. Comfort is king, but if you and your family can deal with 78°, you will likely enjoy some energy savings as a result.

5. Bigger Doesn’t Mean Better

If you want your house to be COLD, you want to buy the biggest AC unit available, right? In reality, you’ll get the best, most efficient performance from a properly sized unit. Oversized central AC units will actually work far less efficiently, will cost more to operate and maintain, will break more often, and will also create odd temperature swings throughout the house. Furthermore, they can even encourage mold growth!

6. Don’t Use a Dehumidifier While Running Your AC

Air conditioners work by drawing humid air through an evaporator coil, causing the moisture to separate from the air and take the heat with it. If you use a dehumidifier while running your air conditioner, it can actually take longer for your home to reach the desired temperature.
