How to Get the Most from Your Air Conditioning System

How to Get the Most from Your Air Conditioning System

Summer heat can make you want to turn up the air conditioning, but expensive power bills may have you thinking twice. Rather than sweating your way through summer, learn how to get the most out of your air conditioner, so you can keep cool and save money. Here are our favorite tips to help you out.

  • Switch out your old unit for an Energy Star rated one. These units can save you on power bills and are more efficient than older systems. A new system can help cool your home better than your old system and uses less natural resources to run it.
  • Use an air conditioner that fits your home. If your system is too large for a small home, you may be wasting money running it. If your system is too small, it may be strained to cool your home and will require more energy to do so.
  • Open the windows and turn off the air conditioning at night if temperatures cool off. Shutting off your system during the night will keep it from running when it isn’t needed and can save you hundreds of dollars.
  • In the morning, close the windows and blinds on the south side of your home. This can keep your home cooler, and reduce the amount of work your air conditioning has to do to maintain a comfortable temperature.
  • Turn up the thermostat. Set your thermostat for the warmest temperature you are comfortable at. Raising it even a few degrees can equal energy savings and a lower bill.
  • Close the doors and vents to rooms that you don’t use often. Reduce the amount of space you are cooling and your air conditioning can keep you comfortable more easily.
  • Turn on fans. Fans move air around your home, which can create a pleasant breeze and make the heat more tolerable. Use ceiling fans, box fans, or pedestal fans to stay comfortable.
  • Tune up your system each year. Schedule a certified HVAC professional to check over your system, clean your evaporator and condenser coils, check your refrigerant levels, and clean and adjust blower components. Regularly maintaining your system can increase efficiency and save you from having to make costly repairs.
  • Keep doors and windows closed when the air conditioning is on. Check your windows to ensure they’re all closed before turning on your system. Kids can sometimes leave doors open, or entering and leaving your home constantly can allow cool air to escape and reduce the efficiency of your air conditioning.
  • Seal leaks around doors and windows with weather-stripping and caulk. Windows and doors can lose cool air over summer and heat over winter, so it is important to look for and take care of leaks to keep your home comfortable year-round.
