Spring Cleaning Tips: Don't Forget Your Fans

Spring Cleaning Tips: Don't Forget Your Fans

With the warm weather upon us, you might be taking the time to chase the dust bunnies out from all of your corners. When cleaning this spring, don’t forget to look up—many things overhead can collect dust, including your ceiling fans! Prepare your home for hotter temperatures and get your fans ready to be turned on with these cleaning tips!

Dusty fans can fling particles and contaminants into the air and leave you breathing in dust, mold spores, and other allergens. Protect those will allergies or respiratory problems in your home, and clean your fan blades once a month to prevent the buildup of dust. Cleaning is easy, and if done regularly, it can take just a few minutes to do.

Break out your vacuum and use the hose attachment to clean off the loose dust. After that’s done, use a duster to clear any dust left behind, and wipe the blades with a paper towel and your favorite multi-surface cleaning product. Because dust will fall, you may want to cover furniture with a sheet, and start your cleaning with the fans in your home.

Exhaust fans may be out of sight, but that doesn’t make them any less important to clean. The fans in your bathroom and kitchen can also build up dust, mold spores, and grease, so they should be regularly cleaned as well. If you have the original documentation for your fans, consult it for instructions to clean the fans. If not, begin by shutting off the breaker to the fan, and use a screwdriver to remove the fan cover and filter. Soak these in a sink full of hot, soapy water while you clean the blades. Use a paper towel or a small scrub brush to remove dust and grease from the blades of the fan. You may need to use a mild degreaser solution to help clean off all the residue. Wipe the blades completely clean and dry them. Rinse and dry the filter and cover, and reassemble the fan.

Don’t neglect your box fans, table fans, and standing fans as well. You should dust and wipe these regularly, as they can also fling dust into your home’s environment. If you can, disassemble the fan and rinse the blade guards, before wiping down the blades as needed.
